🥗Tracking calories didn't work for you? 🍕

Hello Reader,

I hope you are having a wonderful Friday, a bit dreary here in the UK, but I'm honestly excited to start hibernating...

Is tracking calories bad for you?? We've seen both arguments for and against spouted on the internet back and forth at nauseum.

So naturally, I want to throw my hat in the ring.

Ha, just kidding, I take a fairly nuanced take. Put that on my gravestone.

The question is not if it's BAD. Nothing is entirely good or bad, she says as if she's philosopher Yoda now.

The question will always be if it's a GOOD IDEA FOR YOU. Is it giving you what you want? Is it actually helping you break down the skills that you need to get what you want??

I don't use calorie tracking with my clients very often anymore, not because it's not a useful tool, but because it is not what MY clients NEED to help them progress forward.

Why would calorie tracking not be a great idea for some people?

  • You have to consider why you're using something like MyFitnessPal. If it's to change your appearance, then is it giving you what you want?
  • If rigid control is known to be harmful to your relationship with food, then what is flexible control? Can researchers even determine the difference?
  • Are you using calorie tracking to outsource a feeling of control?
  • Tracking calories is a skill you likely already have. Has it given you what you want? Then perhaps you need new skills or more of the same ones that haven't worked?

Rach's Recs:

new segment to bring a bit of brevity and lightness to this newsletter

  1. This chocolate chip cookie recipe I've made a few times over the last few weeks, and they were extremely popular. (It is gluten-free, but if you take out the xanthan gum and swap it for regular flour, no doubt you'll be grand, you little gluten eaters.)
  2. It's Spooky Lake month. GET EXCITED. I love this series by this creator. I think I watched every single episode last year, and I don't think this year will be any different. Enjoy.
  3. If you can, this is the donation link I use to help support families in Gaza. It feels like such a small thing to do in light of all the horror, but being 100% passive feels complicit.

Not sponsored in any way. I fcking LOVE a good recommendation from a friend and some of the best things I've ever read, listened to, or made have been from people who did not shut up about said thing until I *ahem* remembered to follow through.

Speak soon,

xx

Hello Reader, It's Eating Disorder Awareness Week. And if we're really real, the health and fitness industry is rife with eating disorders and disordered eating. It's grim. I'm talking just about other coaches and PT's here... And there are lots of coaches who are leaving people worse off than how they found them, not necessarily on purpose, but ignorance is not a good enough excuse. Negligence is still a form of abuse, and it's just that simple. But I'll save my professional rants for...

Hello Reader, I hope you are EXCEPTIONAL this fine Friday. We had about 36 hours of sunshine this week in the UK, so happy days. Until February 12th, it had rained every single day of 2026, lovely. Anyway. I did something that made me really uncomfortable this week. And I got a massage. Doesn't sound like that should be something that made me that uncomfortable. (nothing to do with the masseuse, Emma was phenomenal, that call is coming from inside the house) If you're local to Berkhamsted,...

Hello Reader, I hope you're exceptional today. Reaching out for support can feel intimidating, but what is really stopping you from clicking the inquiry button? Like really, really, underneath all that intellectualizing (calling myself out there) You're right, nothing, secure my 1:1 spot NOW How do you know if it's a bad time to sign up for coaching? It would financially ruin you, then no, now is not the right time. You don't have a stable living situation, biblical-type life and death...
